Our farm has been in operation for over a century. We have raised beef for 30 years, and employ a rotational grazing system to ensure the health of our herd and the ecology of our land. We have deer, quail, coyote, rabbits, bear, bobcat, and there has even been a fisher cat spotted on the trail cams. We do our best to preserve the health of the habitat where we raise our animals and that translates to a healthier end product for the consumer. With nearly 100 acres of our pasture in forest, our beef forage for an incredibly varied diet. Including apples, nuts, berries, ginseng, and other wild herbs, all this in addition to hay made on our longstanding grasslands. All of these factors play into the final flavor and nutrition of our protein.

Seldom Seen Farms – An Ohio Century Farm

A Legacy of Growth – 100 years and Counting

The Ohio Department of Agriculture recognizes the many social, economic and historic contributions made by Ohio’s founding farm families. Ohio’s Historic Family Farms program was developed as a way to honor these families for their enduring legacy to our state

Seldom Seen Farm

Leonard Leroy Devitt purchased the original farm on February 2, 1920. He was working at Weirton Steel and wanted to start farming & logging in the neighborhood where his wife’s Nora McMillen family (the George’s) lived near Scroggsfield. Leonard both farmed and logged timber.   They raised cows, hogs, chickens, and horses.  They sold milk, meat, and produce. He traded logging labor for land, thus adding acreage to the farm.

Dwight Devitt was born in the old farmhouse on September 15, 1920. Dwight and his brothers and sisters (Velma, Floyd, Doris, and Dale) walked to a one-room school called Pleasant Hill. After coming home from WWII in 1944, Dwight decided to stay on the farm with his parents and start dairy farming. He milked 28 cows for about 35 years. He married Lenore in 1959 and raised 5 children: Ron, Kathy, Donna, Dan, and Leroy. He was also a minister at the Chestnut Ridge and Hope Churches.

Daniel Devitt, was born in 1959 and grew up farming and milking cows.  After going to college and working away from the farm for seven years, he married Barbara.  They decided to move back to the farm to raise their family there.  Zachary, Chelsea, and Caleb were added to generations. Together with Dwight, they started beef farming in 1989. In 2010, they also started raising broiler chickens.

Seldom Seen Farm and Forage launched in 2024 when Zachary moved back onto the farm. He had extensive experience with Farm-to-Table organizations and a passion for sustainable farming and providing healthy food choices to our local markets.
